Tutorials

Iris Recognition: Fundamentals to Research Frontiers

General Chair: Kevin W. Bowyer (University of Notre Dame)
Date: January 16th
Time: 1pm - 5pm, EST

This tutorial is intended for industry, government and academic professionals who would like an overview of the basic principles of iris recognition and an introduction to some current important research issues. This is an updated version of a successful tutorial previously given at the 2011 Automated Face and Gesture Recognition conference and at the Homeland Security Techologies conference.Professor Bowyer is an IEEE Fellow, a past EIC of the IEEE Biometrics Compendium, and co-editor of the Handbook of Iris Recognition.

Outline:

  1. Survey of Iris Recognition Applications
  2. Historical Development of Iris Recognition
  3. How Iris Biometrics Works
    1. Image Acquisition
    2. Iris Region Segmentation
    3. Texture Coding
    4. Matching
  4. Current Research Topics
    1. Effects of Pupil Dilation
    2. Effects of Contact Lenses
    3. Spoofing Attacks
